With most filters

Based on testing by others I still think this is a really good filter. The AMSOIL SDF-20 filter is well constructed and lab tests show that it's an excellent filter. On the other hand, it's big brother the SDF-44 did not filter oil well at 13,000 miles. Proving that an oversized filter is not always a good thing when it comes to filtration. The K&N HP-1004 is a great filter.
This filter is meant to maintain higher flow while still actively filtering, as opposed to by-passing. Lab tests using Mobil 1 at 7500 miles indicates that this filter works as well as the AMSOIL SDF-20. The FRAM x2 (and only the FRAM x2 Series) is probably the most heavily constructed filter I've seen so far. Though all of the Japanese made filters were of exceptional quality, the Fram x2 was as good in every way. Of note with the construction were the following features: metal screen backing the media, heavy metal end caps (purolator oil filter 1998 jeep cherokee have cardboard), and 2 layer filter medium. Lab testing indicates this filter is fine at 5000 miles use with Mobil 1.
However, lab tests do not indicate that the valve jams or fails to work. It's possible that a hard enough impact at a sharp angle while the purchase order was by-passing might cause it to jam open, but I suspect the fluid within the filter would prevent this. While both the STP and the Bosch filters were at one point good filters, they are now manufactured off shore of sub-standard parts. The filter assemblies tended not to have even pleats and generally less media than other comparable filters. There was also a complete lack of a well functioning by-pass valve. With most filters there is an obvious and discrete by-pass valve, but with these filters the can spring and the by-pass valve are the same. The real issue is that in order for the filter to properly by-pass the entire poster assembly would have to move down during use. That is actually not possible with filter assembly properly seating into the anti-drain back valve. This means that the by-pass will effectively never work. In the center of the of picture below you see the filter assembly (top) and the can spring/by-pass valve (bottom). A serious word of caution to experimenters: if you are thinking of trying out different/oversized filters, or ones we haven't listed here, be careful. In the course of testing, we tried a Purolator PureOne oversized oil filter cutter; it leaked pretty bad. Upon inspection, the gasket was found to be MUCH too large, large enough that the oversized M1-105 filter (and M1-104, OEM size) gasket actually fit inside it. If you experiment, be very careful, and look over the filter before testing it. Check the filter immediately upon starting the motor and look for leaks.
Also keep in mind the difference in bypass spring pressures as this may dramatically affect the way your vehicle's oiling system operates. Check with the storyteller manufacturer for exact bypass spring specs, most will usually provide this information via simple email contact with you.

But when I finally got smart and pulled out the dremel tool with the cutting wheel, that did the trick.

Also, I am not an oil filter expert, I've just been maintaining my own cars probably like most of you and have been doing it since I started driving at 14, today I'm 50.

I'm maintaining 5 cars right now (2 for me, wife's, daughter's, and son's). I've owned a lot of cars, probably 20 or so including pick-ups.

I think Corolla is the highest value vehicle made today, just my opinion, its a great around town car that has the capability of making fairly pleasant interstate trips and it doesn't beat you up to bad in the process. I've bought fram oil filters for atvs for this report that I thought were good quality and that an average guy might use. Over the years, I've bought about every oil filter brand out there. I've never really known what was inside oil filters either, or much about how they worked. I imagine there are engineers out there that spend an entire career designing oil filters. I know a whole lot more today than I did, so its been worth the effort. I can see there is a lot of science, both design, material and production, in oil filters. Certainly more than I ever thought there was.

Some are washable

Filters for your furnace are designed to catch the airborne particles that invade the air in our homes. These particles are made up of contaminants such as bacteria, pet dander, dust, mold spores and pollen. It is critical to maintain good air quality by using a good quality furnace air filter and by frequently changing your filter. This will help to reduce the airborne particles in your home by trapping the particles that cause the indoor air pollution.

For a furnace filter to be at its peak effectiveness, the mourner would have to be running 24/7. If you require a high rate of particle removal, consider that you'll be adding several hundred dollars to yearly energy costs by having a continuously running fan. Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) is the current rating standard for furnace filter efficiency. Developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (source debugger), MERV ratings follow a scale of 0 to 20. The rating indicates a filter's ability to remove particles one to 12 microns in size. A higher rating means the filter can remove both smaller particles and more particles in total.
It is generally accepted that a filter with a MERV rating greater than 12 can assist people with allergies.

So, filters actually work better the longer they're used, up to a certain point. Eventually they become too blocked and must be replaced. Some filters with high MERV ratings can reduce the amount of air passing through the subcarrier and negatively affect its performance. Talk to a furnace technician before installing a high-efficiency filter.
The basic models are cheaper but need to be changed often, whereas high-efficiency furnace humidifier filters can last up to a year and grab a lot more particles.
Make sure you buy a furnace filter that is sized for your furnace. If you are unsure, take out the current assister and measure it. Mechanical furnace filters are the usual off-the-shelf filters that are used and disposed of. They draw air in and trap particles. Some are washable / reusable and, with regular cleaning, can last one to five years.

Sometimes called panel filters, flat furnace filters can be composed of mats of glass or cellulose fiber, wood fill, animal hair, synthetic fibers or even slit-and-expanded aluminum. A common electric furnace filter material is fiberglass.

When stretched out, they are several times longer than a regular trane furnace air filter, and when in their compact form, they can catch and hold more particles than a flat model. The pleats allow an increase in filter density while maintaining airflow.

They are the top of the line in mechanical air filters but are rarely used in residential HVAC systems because of their size, price (furnace filters for lennox) and high electricity requirements. Beware of less-efficient products billed as HEPA-type filters - their effectiveness at capturing particles and smoke can be much lower. If a mechanical furnace filter (flat or pleated panel) doesn't satisfy your air cleaning needs, you may want to look to electronic or gas-phase methods. They can work a lot better in some situations and deal with furnace filter tone alarm issues the other types can't, though there are some downfalls. Also referred to as electrostatic precipitators, electronic air cleaners employ an electrical field to trap particles.

Whole house filters

If the filter is old and no longer able to reduce contaminants, the system is useless.
These jugs and pitchers have a life cycle of only about five years. Before you buy, check the label and see what contaminants it removes and if those claims are certified by the National Sanitation Foundation, International, a non-profit testing lab. If you get tired of lugging the filtered water pitcher over to the sink and waiting for it to refill, you might consider a refrigerator ge gwf water filter mounted on your kitchen sink faucet.

The filter screws directly onto the faucet. The water is filtered at the point of service and there is no waiting, unlike the carafe method.

The cartridges in these filters need to be changed every three months and can clog well before their three months is up, severely slowing the delivery of water.
If you want filtered water at more than one sink, you will need to install it at each venue. This can get expensive and tedious as you try and keep track of filter schedules. If the previous options are not quite what you are looking for, consider an under the sink water filter. This type of filter is attached to the cold water line underneath the sink and the water is retrieved through a separate above sink faucet.
These filters are out of sight and contain cartridges that need to be changed only twice a year. These cartridges may be difficult to get at under the sink and therefore difficult to change.

Pressure reverse osmosis systems force water through filters to remove large contaminants and harmful chemicals and then through a membrane to remove very small contaminants. These systems are effective in removing 90% of metals like copper, chromium and lead and minerals like sodium chloride, as well as, fluorides and nitrates. A reverse osmosis system is almost double the cost of the under-the-sink filtering product. However, it is extremely effective in removing contaminants, particularly arsenic. Reverse osmosis systems are large, and can take up all the coffee water filter space beneath your sink.

More than five times as much water is wasted as is filtered with reverse osmosis.

Make sure the system is certified for the contaminants you want removed. Most brita pitcher water filter are not effective in removing lead and chloroform.
They are everywhere from church pews, to athletic clubs to park benches…the ubiquitous water bottle. Somehow we have gotten it into our heads that the water we get in these convenient bottles is better than our own filtered tap water. Now dentists are saying, watch out. You are missing out when you rely only on these bottled options. Your tap water, most likely has fluoride in it, a very helpful watts water filters in keeping your pearly whites healthy and intact.
